Windshields and buffeting

So I feel like I've read everything about the windshield issues and had pre-ordered the Givi windshield from Europe even before I got the bike. The tall Givi windshield offers a lot of protection, but at 5'9" I found myself looking through it unless standing, and it's noisy/clunky off-road. I put the stock windshield back on and liked the low cut more, but was getting a lot of buffeting. I then added the Puig clip on and things got better. I've still been swapping them back and forth.

Today I went for a 105 mi. ride in very strong winds. Where I live in the Columbia River Gorge we get a lot of strong wind all the time. Today doing 60mph with a 40mph headwind was a great day to experiment with adjusting the Puig. I would pull over and try a new setting and then see how it worked. I found the highest setting tilted like the windshield was overall best, however I was hearing a lot of low frequency bass-like clunking sounds today that even with earplugs in was uncomfortable. I was wearing a new-to-me Nexx-X-Wed2 helmet.

I noticed that when I sat further back in the seat I had less noise and almost cleaner wind. That seemed odd to me. Also, standing up resulted in the thumping sounds going away.

Finally I pulled over and removed the peak from the helmet. Instantly there was easily an 100% improvement. No more bass thumping turbulence, and nothing but smooth and massively quieter airflow over the helmet. There was zero head bobbing happening, even in this strong wind.

I was so caught up in chasing the windscreen because i'd read so much online about it being a problem that I missed a really basic opportunity to remove the peak. Peaks are great offroad at slow speed, but they downright suck at highway speeds, and I see no way they would do more than create turbulence. Maybe it's the bike to a lesser degree, but if you're having problems and you haven't removed your peak (visor) on your helmet, damn the styling and give it a try. :)

Thanks for the information about the helmet visors. Looking at your bike, i have a couple questions. Are the mirrors mounted to your hand guards? What brand, and where did you get them?
On this topic, I just got the Expedition windscreen for my 2023 Norden base model.
Had to ship it from the UK, it's installed but I haven't ridden in it yet. Planning on doing so later today.

I wasn't able to stop the majority of the buffeting with the original screen and an adjustable MRA spoiler. Here's hoping the Expedition screen works better for my ergos.

It's the Quick Flip Mirror Mount Kit (Arrow Kit) from Rottweiler: Quick Flip Mirror Mount Kit (Arrow Kit)

I am really happy with the way it works - no vibration whatsoever and lots of adjustment. I can clearly see behind me and the clarity of the mirror is a bit unbelievable for how small they are - plenty useful.

However, for $300 you're spending a lot of money and there are two primary issues for the Norden: 1) The mirrors do not flip all the way in while riding - there isn't enough room for your hands to operate the levers safely if you do this. They will probably fold in if you drop the bike (which is good), however they are also mounted to the flimsy OEM handguards which ultimately probably should be replaced with a stronger aftermarket bar/guard). 2) They are advertised as requiring you to drill a total of 4 holes, which would be true with a flat bar on the end, however on the OEM Norden guards you need to carve out (Dremel tool) a bit of the top most portion of the handguard to get it to fit flush. This essentially weakens an already weak part.

I would've sent them back, but Rottweiler wants a 15% restocking fee, so I figured I'd modify/install them and when they inevitably break I'll get better handguards and maybe the Touratech folding mirrors for $100 Touratech Adjustable Folding Mirror for Motorcycles

All this to say, I'm sure removing the stock bug-eye mirrors has helped with my turbulence issues and one reason the OEM windscreen seems fine with the Puig clip on for me.

Would love to see a picture and a report after your ride! Yes, I think the MRA spoiler looks like it might do more than the Puig clip on, especially if you're taller.

Do you have a link to the windscreen you ordered?

I’m 5’ 11”, just did about 30 miles. Staggeringly large improvement, still some slight buffeting but I can’t tell if it’s the windshield or the 40mph gusts today. Overall very happy.

yeah I bought it from here

I also found improvement with changing out the"Mickey mouse ear" mirrors. Others have disagreed though. Might have to do with how they are positioned also.

Hi,
you seem to like it, so I'll probably try this one too.
Thanks for your feedback
What brand/make are these winglets? Seems an improvement.

Thanks for the link! I placed an order on Sunday, shipped Monday and just arrived at my doorstep on the West Coast. DHL international is making our domestic services look silly. Amazing!
I haven't ridden the Expedition version touring windshield yet, but here it is overlayed with the stock 901 windshield with Puig clip on to give you an idea of the difference.

Each too their own but I can't imagine having that on when riding off road.

I noticed it also appears the Puig Touring screen is now available... https://puigusa.com/en/tuning-motos/windscreens-for-fairing-bikes/touring-screen?bike=30486

Interested in how different the height is from the Expedition screen, and noted that they didn't use a center vent in the windshield.

Definitely not as massive as the Givi screen which I can't see over seated (at 5'9"). I can see over this one.

The Puig screen says it is 150mm taller than the stock Norden screen, so it would appear it's about another 1"/25mm taller than the stock Expedition screen. I don't know how important the wind vent in the center of the screen is, but it seems somewhat important for higher speeds as the Givi screen flexed a lot for me at highway speeds and isn't certified for Autobahn use either.

Out of morbid windshield curiosity (I seem to have a windscreen addiction) I lined up the Givi to the Expedition screen and it is absolutely massive.

Hey,

I have mounted the high disc of the Expedition for 200km. Absolutely great as a touring disc on the road. I can ride at 180 km/h with my visor open, despite my height of 1.90 m and high enduro seat (one piece). I don't have any turbulence and it's really quiet (NEXX X.WED2 helmet with peak). Off-road, however, it is too high for me and disturbs me in technically demanding sections. Nevertheless, an absolute recommendation for touring riders with a large proportion of on-road use.

I rode 125 miles this morning with the Expedition screen and think it's the best match of anything I've tried. Buffeting isn't there with a Nexx Wed2 with visor removed. Height seems perfect for touring and I can see over it and far enough ahead that I'm not bothered by the height. That said I've only ridden a little dirt with it and if it bothered me I'd probably just stand. Optically it's really good unless you look at the small strip where the very top is bent forward, but it's not an issue and I didn't find it to be a problem.

The cut out is interesting...at higher speeds makes for a little more wind pressure on the chest, but totally smooth for the helmet. I think in hotter weather this will also help cool the rider a bit.
