Test rode a 2024 Expedition today, thinking about pulling the trigger

Rode a ‘24 Expedition today at the local dealer. Price it right. Warranty is right. I find it so hard to commit to something after only 30 minutes on it though. In Alabama it was hot as hell today, so kinda hard to judge, but it felt like it can be warm. Loved everything else about it, but what might be the things I’ll hate if I buy it?

So far my sole complaint is how tall the seat height is. I’m 6’ and on toes. Also a little unnerving hearing multiple complaints about its propensity to death wobble, but not sure if that’s a thing or just a couple of rogue experiences.

I plan on retiring my 06 BMW 650GS if I get this one. She’s been a great bike, but at 48 I’m just ready to get off the old thumper and onto something a little more comfy.

Riding will be a mixture of a bike I can tour on (I just like the ADV riding position for long multi day touring trips) and actually beating the brakes off of it off road.

Help a brotha out!

The heat is definitely real, my expedition is decatted and has a camel shock heat shield and it still cooks my lower legs. I get the wobble around 80mph but honestly think its the front tire (MotoZ dual venture) Im about to switch out the front and rear for Some Dunlop Trailmax Raids and see how they do.

Yeah the heat is a thing around your lower legs as others mentioned, I've also decat'd the bike and it's much better. I live in the mid/northern part of Australia and bought mine leading into summer, and I had no real issues to be honest.

I lowered mine an inch, I'm much shorter however at 169cm. But I do know a few people that are around that 180-185cm height that have also lowered the expedition. if doing a decent bit of off-road the suspension benefits with a valving tweak anyhow to bring it closer to the valving of the 890R, so I did that while lowering.

The last thing is finding a screen setup that works for you, I wasn't a fan of the expedition screen with the distortion through it, the WRS touring it much better.

They're an easy bike to ride, and quite engaging with the liveliness of the engine.

Never had wobbles, but I have had a couple of minor tank slaps... some of the biggest hits I've had at speed it did quite well, so I'm not concerned

Even with the issues I’ve had with my bike, I’d still choose it again. I absolutely love how it handles and its overall character — it just clicks with me.

The only thing that’s caught my curiosity lately is the F900GS. Sure, the tank’s smaller, but what I think I’d miss most is the unique tank design on the Norden. It really shapes the way the bike rides and feels.

And since I’ve had experience with the R nineT, the transition to the Norden felt completely natural. It just fits.

Right! I’ve been on BMW’s for over a decade, and they’re kinda my preferred motorcycle, but the Norden just has the looks, the low slung fuel tang makes it handle incredible (I was able to off road my buddy’s 890 ADV R once), and the power is nice, and most of all I am sick of expensive ass BMW’s with garbage suspension. The suspension on the Norden is how these bikes should be for what they cost.

I don’t move through bikes frequently, so I’m just trying to make damn sure I think it all through.

The cam issue, and the overall reliability reputation of the KTM brand concerns me, even with the 5 year warranty option, but I also don’t want to be stranded in the woods. 😬

"I absolutely love how it handles and its overall character — it just clicks with me." Same here. Bought mine in April. Already put more than 4K miles on it, rough terrain and highways. I found it to be extremely stable at high speeds and very agile on rocky trails. Running Tusk tires on it. Much better than my 2016 GSA. So happy that I made the switch. Wind screen is meh, I'm 6'4" though. So this is always an issue.
Heat from the radiators is definitely an issue. Have to stand up or spread my legs every few minutes here in 100F temps. It burns my legs above the boot. Mostly the left side for some reason.
Only other issue I had is cruise control not engaging. I narrowed it down to the rear brake. When I briefly tap the foot brake when it doesn't engage, the cruise comes back. Gotta get it to the dealer to fix. Only mods are bar risers, phone mount, tank bag and Tusk rackless luggage. This bike doesn't need anything else.

Oh, and a piece of advice, I saw somebody say, you won't be happy until every bolt has loctite on it. That is definitely true on the rocky roads and washboard here it CO and UT. Especially any bolt on the front fender and fork spring protectors as well as the luggage rack. The cross bar fell off. BTW the OEM luggage is useless. The plastic mounts were originally designed for bicycles and all broke on the first mild crash.

I am 6'3" at 250lbs... the bike is a bit under sprung for me. The heat is real, but not so bad as I've felt the need to do anything about it just yet but probably will de-cat or heat shield soon. I really like the bike, so much fun to ride.

That looks like a 2025 with the colors. I thought the 2024 were all blue.

Cheers

that's a pic of a 2025 bike isn't it? Either way, the bike can be a little tall for some. Not an issue for me as I'm 6'-3, have long legs, and height is about perfect for me. Bike doesn't feel tall when riding at all, on or off road. Can get a bit warm at times. Haven't done a decat on mine yet and not 100% sure that'd fix the heat issues anyway. When the fans are on it blows hot air on my legs when seated. When standing it's not an issue.

It’s supposed to be a 2024, but heck I dunno 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m really wrestling with this one. With the KTM rebate I can be in this bike for $14k. Not a huge fan of how tall the seat height is, but I can live with it as it’s what I’m used to with my Dakar. The weight being balanced down low really makes me think that can be livable.

if I have to tweak the forks a bit, I’m ok with that. This WP suspension is far and away better than anything I’ve ever had. I’m a chonky monkey at 6’ 235#, but I do pack fairly light for trips.

The main bugaboo is a friend is selling his 2023 Tiger 900 RP, and it is decked out to the hilt, for less than the Norden. I rode it, and was shocked just how much I loved it. It really had no negatives, only 3k miles, and about $5k worth of add ons I would want to do as well.

So a real pickle here. I really love the look of the Norden, and riding it was a blast. I prefer to buy from my local shop when possible, and with the Tiger I’m out of warranty and the nearest dealer is 1:45 minutes away. The Norden’s 5 year warranty with my local dealer who always do me right is a hard thing to move past.

I don’t make these purchases often, so it’s a hard one. Last new bike I bought was my 800gs in 2013
