Pannier racks, asymmetrical or symmetrical?

785 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Keiser
Hey folks,

Ordering gear while awaiting receipt of an Expedition. While I have TouraTech asym racks on my BMW, with asym boxes, I also attach 2 Mosko Moto 39L panniers for most riding, which I do not feel are too wide for filtering traffic and such on my f800GS.

Experiences and recommendations appreciated. Cannot wait to join your numbers in bike as well as spirit.

Thanks,
Keiser

I am ordering symmetrical pannier racks (Outback Motortek) because my soft bags are both the same size. The width difference is 2.5 inches from center of bike, on the lh side for the ones I'm getting (asymmetrical vs symmetrical). That extra space on the lh side will easily fit a nice rectangular tool box, and make the bike look even from the rear. It might be a bit wider, by inches, than I wanted, but I don't have any other choice unless I want to buy all new bags, which I don't.

If you go Mosko Moto, 1,000,000% go with the 35/35L kit and not the offset 35/25L on the backcountry soft panniers, I bought the offset kit and wish I had gone with the 35/35L. Turns out they are almost the same size and you can strap the 35 down to look like 25 and make it offset if needed, OR just run them to the full 35 size and they don't sick out that much.

The Touratech hard pannier's are way bigger and you should get the offset ones for those, if you are into the hard panniers that is...

I'm running asymmetrical Outback Motortek racks with the integrated mounting tabs for my Kriega OS 32L and 22L bags. I wanted things as narrow as possible. Even with the asymmetrical racks, there is room to mount a small tool tube or fuel bottle higher up behind the left rack.

I bought the Mosko 35/35 with the asymmetrical rack. I like the extra space and don’t bother with ‘squeezing’ the tailpipe side anymore. I like the extra storage and I don’t notice the asymmetry at all. Mosko gave good advice on that one. I just put heavier stuff on the side closer to center line.

Asymmetrical, here is what it looks like with a tool box attached to the inside. My Mosko 35L will be going on both sides.

Chicken dinner!
This settles it for me. Asymmetry for the win.
Thanks all.

Looks like a great setup.
I have the 35L Mosko bags and I’m trying to get the same EMD duffle. Camel are out of stock, do you have another source?
Is that the Denali brake/tail LED also?

I've seen many similar boxes on the internets. Which one did you buy? Link?
Thanks!

I bought one from Amazon. I wouldn’t say it’s waterproof. I’ll probably add some silicone to the seams for better waterproofing. The body is mostly plastic with a metal overlay in some spots. Also comes in silver.

Camel is the only US distributor right now. New company out of Europe. It is the Denali brake light. I was in Costa Mesa Saturday getting my first service done at 3 Bros. I’m in Ontario.
Not to open a new thread about the same topic. Any chance to have symmetric soft bags on Norden? With some smaller aftermarket muffler maybe?
I do also have 800GS with not-so-well known aftermarket asymmetric racks and 32+28L alu boxes and this is annoying. Wider that the GS handlebar (which is even wider than the horizon in Mongolic steppes). Being fully equipped, I'm a car-wide. I hoped I could be better prepared for a city commute on Norden.
I appreciate any opinion. Thanks!
This has been a very informative and helpful conversation. During which, have received confirmation of my Expedition being delivered in ~ 10 days.

Thanks all.
