Hi Norden Forum Folks, I love my new Norden, but.....

Has anybody had this mildly terrifying issue or something similar. I have owned it for 4 months and have done about 900 miles on it.

I was riding along at artound 50mph down a long wet hill coming into a corner, I changed down and backed off the throttle using the engine breaking. Then suddenly the back wheel stopped and skidded round very quickly, fortunately I was covering the clutch (even with a quickshifter old habits right?), I managed to pull it in quickly and the back wheel came into line again. I couldn,t hear the engine running, I looked down at the dash, it was all active, no warning lights, no big yellow square with an engine management or fault code. Just no revs, the engine had stopped suddenly. I coasted into a small clearing by the road and stopped. I pressed the starter button and it fired up immediately. My riding companion pulled up and asked what had happened as she saw the whole thing. I have no idea.

I took it to the excellent local Norden/KTM dealer, they couldn't find anything. No fault codes, took it for a test ride, no issues. I was very unnerved by the incident, so a few days later I took it out again on very dry roads, going only on mainly straight A roads, coming through a small town towards a roundabout, I changed down and backed off the throttle at around 25mph, it happened again. As it was dry it simply coasted to a stop, rather than causing the backwheel to skid. I tried pulling the clutch in and letting it out as it did to see if it would bump start, it didn't. I hit the starter and it came to life immediately.

I instantly went to the dealer and within 15 minutes they had plugged it in, saw no errors or faults again.

Frankly I am at a loss. Has anybody had anything similar?

Ignition might be off when kickstand is down (sensor) or the quickshifter while shifting. Maybe you rest your foot on the shift lever?). These would be the first things I would check. But I am not a mechanic, these are only guesses.

My Norden has 20k miles, I know exactly what you are talking about but I have no idea what is causing it. It’s completely random sometimes and sometimes its just a regular thing to happen in a days ride. It only happens when I downshift to first and im coming to a stop. Its very strange. I just got used to it. I don’t think it’ll leave me stranded. I tend not to worry about it. I doubt my dealer could find the issue since I can’t replicate it on demand.

Curious to see if anyone has a answer!

Hi Rich, I tried all I could think of. Pushed on the side stand mount rode around a car park pushing on it, nothing. Then I flicked it down and the engine cut out, but it showed the big yellow warning sign. Same again with engine cut off switch, it stopped but with yellow warning sign. None of which were activate during my issue.

Hey Cedric, glad it's not my imagination then. How many times has it happened in total? Have you told your dealer?
I don't think it will leave me stranded but it did nearly cause me to crash in the wet, it happened very fast and I was doing 55mph changed down to fourth gear ready for the corner. As it stopped the back wheel locked up and skidded round very fast because the road surface was wet. I came very close to crashing, but usually ride with fingers covering the clutch so that saved me. The other time was in third gear at around 25mph. If yours only happens going into first gear then that means hopefully you aren'y going fast or into a corner. I am on to the dealer and trying to get a reply from Husqvana (5 days waiting but still nothing). I will let you know if I find anything out? Ride safe, or slowly in my case. And definitely not in the wet....

Hey Bauer, it is going in to the dealership for a full strip down and inspection next week. Fuel pump, throttle bodies, software updates, water in the fuel, clutch switch etc. the usual sort of things they look at, but no specific fault or issue relating has been found or seen before by them. 5 days in still no response from Husqvana.

Kolega má KTM 890 a děla mu to podobně. Zastaví na křižovatce a motor chcipne. Děla mu to sporadicky. Servis si s tím neví rady
A colleague has a KTM 890 and it did the same thing to him. He stops at an intersection and the engine revs. She did it to him sporadically. The service doesn't know how to deal with it.

Thanks @Widle yes of course I didn’t check on the KTM Forums, It stands to reason that the 890 power unit might also possibly have this fault. I will ask over there too. Let’s see what the service folks and the Customer service teams says. Although I suspect they may not find anything “wrong” with it. I am door stepping Husqvana tomorrow so let’s see what they say?

Okay next thought. Is everyone experiencing this in a downshift? I'm not yet 100% up to speed in the bike. Is the auto downshift/ upshift able to be turned off? My ducati was. If you are able to turn it off, does the problem go away? My thoughts are the autoshift components not the ecu or a fuel issue. Thoughts ???

The quick shifter can be turned Off or On in the Menu. Husky calls it "Easy Shift" in the Menu/Manual.

I get flame-outs about every ride before it warms up especially when it's cold out, I keep my bike in my heated shop, but I notice the issue the most when the ambient temp outside is <50°. For me, it almost always happens after a mile or 2 from a cold start, usually in 1st or 2nd while I'm slowing down for the stop sign. As soon as I pull in the clutch from down-shifting it will die, most of the time it does it at 10-15 mph but it has happened between 3rd and 4th a couple times. AAAaaand the slipper clutch means it can't be bump-started by releasing the clutch again so you have to hit the button.

On a good note, the starter button only needs to be tapped not pressed and held to start the bike like a push to start in a car, so one quick press with my thumb and it's back on. Still makes me pucker a bit when I'm busy riding and not thinking about having to turn it back on. After 10 min it's almost never does it again, it also rarely dies it if I don't use the clutch and just stop it down when down-shifting.

@felt9onepilot Good idea, I will get the dealer to do that after they have done test rides once they have been through it completely. First I have to get the dealer to actually experience it happening, during a 20 mile test ride it may not acualy happen. But turning the quick shifter off would be a good way of helping to isolate the fault as you say.

@DarkWhiteChocolate It has happened to me at 55mph in 4th and 25mph in third gear. Interesting that you have had it at speed a couple of times, but mainly slowing to a stop in 1st and 2nd gear. I was riding in the cold but the engine had been running for an hour and was well up to temperature. The slipper clutch is exactly why I can't bump start it, but in the wet it was pretty dramatic the speed that the back wheel locked, skidded and came round, obviously there is no traction control or ABS available when the engine has stopped whilst in motion. So a lose, lose situation for me.
