It's be unusually sunny this week and even in the mid 60's today so naturally I've been riding every second possible and unfortunately I've been stuck in quite a bit of traffic today. I keep smelling raw gasoline. I filled up with fuel today around 10am at a place I don't usually fuel up at and was careful not to spill any or fill past the little bar on the inside of the tank. 3 hours later I keep smelling gasoline like I spilled some on my helmet. I first wrote it off as the car in front of me, then the next car but now at every stop light it keeps getting worse. I can't tell if it's coming from the exhaust or the engine area.

Has anyone else experienced the raw gas smell??

I've replaced my muffler with a Tekmo slip-on, but the cat is still installed and intact and I only use 92 octane or higher if I can find it.

It is entirely possible that every car in Oregon has had its catalytic converter stolen and that's what I'm smelling, but I'm starting to think it's my bike... Any ideas??

DWC : did you do the midpipe swap to de-cat yet??

How many miles on the new exhaust can?

Could it be still burning off the internals of that new can??

albeit, it would not smell of raw petrol though

I'm stumped.

In case you did overfill, have you checked under your bike for a puddle via the fuel line wastegate for your tank.?

Did you remove the tank ?? and if yes, could you have crimped a line under the tank?

Just throwing things on the board seeing if something sticks........

Still have the cat, no midpipe install yet.

I've got about 5000 miles on the Tekmo muffler.

Tank has never been removed (as far as I know, none of the gas lines have been touched.)

I'll check the overflow tube, I don't think I spilled anything in the overflow area surrounding the filler but maybe... That's a good idea!

It's been sitting in my shop (currently, and sadly it's the only gas powered thing in there) so I'll give it a good sniff this morning before I start it up. Then try to smell the exhaust without all the cars around. There's a pretty good possibility that it was just all the other cars around me due to catalytic converter theft here in Oregon.

The most common issue that can cause a gas smell is a blockage or bend in one of the tanks breather hoses.
After I got my Norden I took body panels off as part of the farkle installation process and saw one of the hoses coming out of the fuel filler was bent from the factory. After some massaging I got the tube unkinked and routed properly.

On my new Norden, the fuel filler neck was not correctly screwed down and was leaking fuel anytime the tank was full or the bike was slightly tipped over. Just tightened all the bolts (several were surprisingly really loose) and everything was back to normal. No gas smell, no gas leaking. All cured

Ok, I did not notice any smells in my shop... today it was nice out so I took her for a spin and after coming to a stop in town I sniffed around and I could smell gas the most around the gas tank filler. Sounds like it's from the gas tank gasket or a vent line that's plugged. I'll take a look some time this weekend, Thanks!
